How to play Lucky Lanterns
- On your turn, tap Roll to roll the eight-sided lantern die as many times as you like. Each roll changes your pot for this turn.
- 3, 4, 5 or 6 adds that many points to your pot. ×2 Double doubles the whole pot!
- 🛡️ Shield protects you: the next Gust this turn is blocked and you keep rolling.
- 💨 Gust (there are two on the die): without a shield, your pot blows away and your turn ends.
- Tap Bank whenever you like to add your pot to your score and end your turn safely. The first player to bank 100 points wins straight away.
Strategy tips
- A quarter of all rolls are Gusts, so a big pot is always at risk. Early in the game, banking somewhere around 20 to 35 works well.
- Got a Shield? That's a great moment to keep rolling — the next Gust can't hurt you.
- A Double is worth most when your pot is already big, which makes it very tempting to roll once more…
- Behind? Take bigger risks. Ahead? Bank smaller pots and make your opponents chase you.
- If one more good turn wins it for someone else, it's time to go for 100 in one go.
Three ways to play
Solo: race to 100 — a fresh challenge every day, the same for everyone. vs Computer: four characters from Rookie Robo (easy) to Grandmaster Owl (expert); beat each one to earn its star. vs Friend: pass the device (up to 6 players), or send an invite link and play online — no account needed.
Variants
Play with 2 to 6 players on one device, with a friend using a link, or against Rookie Robo (cautious), Clever Cat (always banks at 15), Sly Fox (plays the score) and Grandmaster Owl (weighs every face of the die). In the daily Race to 100, everyone gets the same dice rolls: reach 100 in as few turns as you can, with a share grid of 🏮 banked and 💨 gusted turns.
About Lucky Lanterns
Lucky Lanterns is a PlayTrova original, inspired by classic push-your-luck dice games like Pig, where you keep rolling to build a score until you decide to stop — or lose it all. Our version adds a special eight-sided lantern die with Doubles and Shields. An early design had just one Gust face, but testing showed that the Double then exactly cancels out the Gust, so rolling forever was always the best plan. Swapping the 2 for a second Gust makes every bank a real decision, and games still end in about ten turns each.
FAQ
How many players can play Lucky Lanterns?
Two to six players can share one device. You can also play one friend online with a link, play the computer, or race the daily dice on your own.
Is it just luck?
Each roll is luck, but deciding when to bank is skill. Over many games a smart banker wins far more often — Grandmaster Owl beats the always-bank-at-15 Clever Cat about three games in four.
Do Shields stack?
No. You can hold one Shield at a time and it blocks one Gust. Rolling another Shield while one is up does nothing.
What happens if I reach 100?
You win as soon as you bank enough to reach 100 — nobody gets another turn.
Is the dice fair in online games?
Yes. The rolls come from a shared random seed, so both players always see exactly the same dice.
